Inspired By Stars Traversing The Night Sky

The Seiko Star Time features a dial built from five layered rotating discs. Each disc is responsible for a specific range of cumulative time: 24 hours, 1,000 hours, 10,000 hours, 100,000 hours and 1,000,000 hours.

The innermost disc covers 24 hours and also indicates the current time of day, so the watch remains usable as a conventional timekeeper while it tracks the long arc of accumulated hours.

As the discs move forward, their motion is imperceptible to the naked eye. The progression is slow, steady and continuous, reflecting the way effort and achievement build over time in a career like Ohtani’s.

Each disc is set with a diamond, and together they mirror the motion of stars across the night sky—gradual yet leaving a lasting trace. It is from this concept that the name Seiko Star Time was chosen.

As of July 2026, Seiko notes that no other wristwatch can measure and display up to one million hours using five disc indicators. This makes the Star Time a singular piece in terms of both concept and execution.

A Watch Presented To Shohei Ohtani

Development of the Seiko Star Time began around three years ago, driven by Ohtani’s question and Seiko’s desire to answer it through mechanical craft. In 2026, the completed watch was personally presented to him by Seiko Watch Corporation Chairman, CEO, and CCO Shinji Hattori.

Ohtani commented that he wanted to wear something that reflects the time he has invested so far and how much further he can go. Seeing the watch in person, he felt it matched his imagination and called it “truly wonderful.”

For Seiko, the project represents not only a tribute to an ambassador but also a milestone in watchmaking culture. The creation of a wristwatch with such cumulative timekeeping performance pushed the brand’s design, engineering and assembly capabilities in new directions, rewarding the development team that devoted themselves to the idea.

Engineering A Five-Disc Display

The five rotating discs of Seiko Star Time are significantly thicker than conventional dials and hands. This alone created a major design and technical challenge. To keep the overall thickness manageable, Seiko had to develop a new structure exclusively for this model.

This required close integration between the disc design and the movement architecture, alongside changes to the movement configuration and new assembly methods. Design and manufacturing teams collaborated closely to find a solution that would allow the discs to move reliably over extremely long time spans.

Throughout the project, Seiko held repeated discussions with Ohtani. During these conversations, the idea of setting a diamond into each rotating disc was adopted, giving the watch its star‑like visual identity.

Even the silicone strap was custom‑designed, with a length tailored specifically to Ohtani’s wrist. It balances comfortable fit with everyday practicality, reinforcing the idea that the watch is meant to be worn, not just displayed.

Shohei Ohtani’s Career Context

Shohei Ohtani has been a Seiko ambassador in Japan for ten years. Born in Iwate Prefecture in 1994, he was selected first overall in the 2012 NPB Draft and joined the Hokkaido Nippon‑Ham Fighters, quickly gaining attention for his two‑way role as both pitcher and hitter.

He led the Fighters to the Japan Series championship in 2016 and was named Pacific League MVP. In 2018, he moved to Major League Baseball with the Los Angeles Angels, winning American League Rookie of the Year.

In 2021, he recorded 46 home runs and nine pitching wins, earning his first American League MVP award. In 2023, he became the first MLB player to achieve double‑digit wins and double‑digit home runs in consecutive seasons, winning a second unanimous AL MVP.

In 2024, Ohtani signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers, recorded 50 home runs and 50 stolen bases, won the World Series and was named National League MVP. In 2025, he added 14 pitching appearances and a career‑high 55 home runs, helping the Dodgers win a second consecutive World Series and earning unanimous MVP honours for the third straight year and fourth time overall.

Case, Materials And One-Of-A-Kind Status

Seiko Star Time is housed in a high‑intensity titanium case with a matching clasp. A box‑shaped sapphire crystal covers the dial and features anti‑reflective coating on the inner surface to enhance legibility.

The case measures 41.8 mm in diameter and 17.4 mm in thickness, reflecting the demands of the multi‑disc construction. Water resistance is rated at 10 bar, and the watch is fitted with a silicone strap for comfort and durability.

Importantly, Seiko Star Time is a one‑of‑a‑kind model and is not for sale. It exists solely as a unique creation for Shohei Ohtani, standing as a symbol of his relationship with Seiko and of the brand’s willingness to push mechanical timekeeping into conceptual territory.
