TAG Heuer Monza Flyback Chronograph Celebrates 50 Years On The Racing Line

The Monza marks its 50th anniversary with forged carbon, a flyback chronograph and a 500-piece limited edition.

Fifty years after its debut, the TAG Heuer Monza returns to the circuit that gave it its name. Unveiled ahead of the 2026 Italian Grand Prix in Monza, the new TAG Heuer Monza Flyback Chronograph celebrates half a century of one of the brand’s most distinctive racing watches, combining references to the original 1976 model with the materials and mechanical performance of contemporary TAG Heuer.

Limited to 500 individually numbered pieces, the anniversary edition uses a 42mm forged carbon case, a black and red racing-inspired dial and the COSC-certified TH20-12 automatic flyback chronograph calibre. More than simply reviving a historic design, TAG Heuer has used the anniversary to connect the origins of the Monza with its modern interpretation.

Born From A Formula 1 Victory

The story of the Monza begins several years before the watch itself. In 1971, Heuer became the Official Timekeeper of Scuderia Ferrari, establishing a partnership that placed the Swiss watchmaker directly inside the world of Formula 1. Four years later, Niki Lauda secured the 1975 Formula 1 World Championship, delivering Ferrari its first Drivers’ Championship since 1964.

Heuer celebrated the achievement in 1976 with a new chronograph named after one of motorsport’s most famous circuits: Monza. The original immediately distinguished itself through a bold racing aesthetic, establishing an identity that would continue to evolve through several generations over the following decades.

For the model’s 50th anniversary, TAG Heuer has returned to that history without attempting to reproduce the 1976 watch literally. Instead, the anniversary edition builds upon the contemporary Monza Flyback Chronograph architecture introduced in 2023 while incorporating visual references to the original.

Forged Carbon For The Modern Monza

The new Monza is housed in a 42mm cushion-shaped case made from forged carbon, immediately separating it from a conventional vintage-inspired anniversary watch. Lightweight and highly resistant, the material has become closely associated with modern motorsport and gives every case a slightly different marbled appearance.

The carbon construction extends to the fixed bezel and crown, while the chronograph pushers are made from steel with a black DLC coating. At the rear, TAG Heuer uses a screw-down grade 2 titanium caseback, also treated with black DLC, incorporating a sapphire window and the individual limited-edition number.

Despite its mechanical complexity and sporting construction, water resistance remains a useful 100 metres. A domed sapphire crystal with double anti-reflective treatment protects the dial.

Black, White And Racing Red

The dial is where the connection with the historic Monza becomes particularly visible. A matte black base provides the background for a deliberately high-contrast combination of white indications and red chronograph accents, recalling the colour language associated with the original model.

The layout uses two counters. At 3 o’clock sits the chronograph minute counter with a red lacquered hand, while permanent seconds are displayed at 6 o’clock with a white hand. The central chronograph seconds hand is also finished in red, creating an immediate visual distinction between regular timekeeping and elapsed-time indications.

White hour markers and the hour and minute hands incorporate Super-LumiNova for improved visibility. At 9 o’clock, the angled date aperture maintains one of the distinctive details of the contemporary Monza architecture.

Around the dial, the black flange incorporates both tachymeter and pulsometer scales. Their presence reinforces the instrument-like character of the watch and recalls an era when chronographs were designed as practical tools for measuring speed and other timed events.

The TH20-12 Flyback Chronograph

Behind the anniversary Monza sits the manufacture Calibre TH20-12, visible through the sapphire caseback. The automatic movement is COSC-certified and incorporates the complication that gives the modern watch its full name: the flyback chronograph.

Unlike a conventional chronograph, which normally needs to be stopped, reset and started again before beginning a new measurement, the flyback function allows the timing sequence to be reset and immediately restarted with a single operation. It is a complication with obvious historical relevance to motorsport, where consecutive intervals often need to be measured as quickly as possible.

The movement can be seen beneath the individually numbered caseback, creating a deliberate contrast between the technical contemporary calibre and the historic inspiration behind the watch.

A Monza Made For The Circuit

TAG Heuer completes the watch with a black perforated calfskin leather strap with contrasting red stitching. The combination is unmistakably influenced by classic motorsport, while a sandblasted grade 2 titanium folding clasp with black DLC coating continues the lightweight, dark aesthetic of the case.

The timing of the presentation is equally deliberate. TAG Heuer has unveiled the watch ahead of the 2026 Italian Grand Prix at Monza, returning the collection to the circuit whose name it has carried since 1976.

Fifty years after the original Monza celebrated Niki Lauda and Ferrari’s championship success, the new Monza Flyback Chronograph approaches that history through contemporary watchmaking rather than nostalgia alone. Forged carbon, the TH20-12 flyback calibre and a modern 42mm architecture give it a distinctly current identity, while the black and red colour scheme preserves an unmistakable connection to the racing chronograph that started the story.

With only 500 numbered examples available, the 50th-anniversary Monza becomes both a celebration of TAG Heuer’s motorsport history and one of the more focused collector-oriented expressions of the modern Monza.
