Grand Seiko Elegance SBGW325 “Arabic Blue” Pays Tribute To The First Manual-Winding 9S
A deep indigo dial, distinctive Arabic numerals and the hand-wound 9S64 revisit a defining chapter in Grand Seiko’s mechanical history.
In 2001, Grand Seiko introduced the SBGW003 with the Calibre 9S54, marking the arrival of the brand’s first manually wound 9S mechanical movement. Twenty-five years later, Grand Seiko returns to that chapter with the new Elegance SBGW325 “Arabic Blue”, a limited edition that retains one of the most distinctive elements of the original while giving the design a distinctly contemporary character.
The connection to the Grand Seiko SBGW003 is immediately visible in the applied Arabic numerals, a defining feature of the 2001 model. Rather than reproducing the original watch, however, Grand Seiko surrounds those numerals with a deep navy blue dial inspired by Japan’s long tradition of indigo dyeing. The result is a watch that looks firmly rooted in Grand Seiko’s past while using colour and finishing to establish its own identity.

A Modern Interpretation Of The SBGW003
The SBGW003 represented an important moment for Grand Seiko, introducing the Calibre 9S54 as the collection’s first manually wound 9S movement. The new Grand Seiko SBGW325 acknowledges that history through its dial layout and numerals, while updating the overall aesthetic for the present day.
The deep navy dial provides a strong background for the raised applied Arabic numerals and silver-toned hands and indexes. A subtle touch of gold appears on the central seconds hand and the Grand Seiko logo, creating a restrained link to the original watch’s use of gold-coloured details.
The numerals themselves remain one of the watch’s most recognisable elements. Their pronounced relief gives the dial considerable depth, while the contrast between the dark blue surface and metallic components keeps the display clear and elegant.

Japanese Indigo On The Wrist
Colour is central to the identity of the SBGW325. Grand Seiko describes the dial as being inspired by the Japanese tradition of indigo dyeing, a connection that extends to the crocodile leather strap.
The strap is dyed using traditional hon-ai techniques, a natural indigo-dyeing process carried out by skilled artisans. The colour is developed gradually by hand, producing the rich navy tone intended to complement the dial.
Grand Seiko also includes an additional calfskin leather strap, giving the owner an alternative to the crocodile strap while retaining the same 19mm lug width. A quick-release system allows the straps to be changed without requiring specialised tools.
Zaratsu Finishing In A Compact Case
The SBGW325 measures 37.3mm in diameter, with a 44.3mm lug-to-lug measurement and a thickness of 11.7mm. Those proportions keep the watch close to the dimensions associated with its historical inspiration, while the case architecture gives the modern model its own character.
The stainless steel case is finished using Grand Seiko’s Zaratsu polishing technique. The rounded profile is designed to appear smooth from different angles, while the lugs broaden towards their ends and incorporate carefully defined lines and mirrored surfaces.
A box-shaped sapphire crystal sits above the dial, with anti-reflective treatment applied to its inner surface. The caseback is transparent and secured by six screws, providing a view of the manually wound movement.

The 9S64 Returns To The Spotlight
At the centre of the SBGW325 is the Grand Seiko Calibre 9S64, a manually wound mechanical movement offering approximately 72 hours of power reserve.
The movement operates at 4Hz and contains 24 jewels. Grand Seiko states an average daily rate of +5 to -3 seconds per day when the movement is measured before casing under controlled conditions. For normal use, the stated accuracy is +10 to -1 seconds per day.
The long power reserve gives the watch a practical advantage for a manually wound movement, allowing it to run for approximately three days after a full winding. Grand Seiko also explains that the movement is designed to maintain stable accuracy as the mainspring gradually unwinds and its torque decreases.

A Limited Edition For The Elegance Collection
The SBGW325 “Arabic Blue” is limited to 600 individually numbered pieces and will be available from Grand Seiko Boutiques from October 2026.
In Portugal, Grand Seiko lists the watch at €5,700. The combination of the compact stainless steel case, deep indigo aesthetic, traditional Japanese strap treatment and hand-wound 9S64 makes the SBGW325 a contemporary interpretation of one of the more understated chapters in Grand Seiko’s mechanical history.
Rather than simply recreating the SBGW003, the new model uses its most recognisable visual signature as a starting point. The Arabic numerals remain, but the surrounding design has moved towards Japanese indigo, Zaratsu-finished steel and a modern interpretation of the 9S platform.
