Breguet Marine 5517 And 5527 Bring The Quai de l’Horloge Into A New Light

New dial treatments bring Breguet’s Quai de l’Horloge guilloché to the Marine collection, pairing traditional craftsmanship with the robustness of a contemporary nautical watch.

The Marine collection has always occupied a distinctive place within Breguet’s history, drawing a direct line between the Maison’s legacy of precision instruments and its contemporary interpretation of maritime watchmaking. The origins of that story reach back to Abraham-Louis Breguet’s appointment as Watchmaker to the French Royal Navy in 1815, following his admission to the Bureau des Longitudes the previous year.

Breguet’s marine chronometers subsequently accompanied navigators and explorers on major expeditions, including voyages across the Pacific and around the world. The modern Marine collection translates that heritage into watches designed around performance, robustness and a distinctly nautical aesthetic. The latest versions of the Marine 5517 and Marine Chronographe 5527 add another historical layer through the hand-guilloché Quai de l’Horloge pattern.

The Quai de l’Horloge Comes To The Marine

The new Marine models introduce Breguet’s Quai de l’Horloge pattern across their dials, a motif unveiled to mark the Maison’s 250th anniversary. Its name refers to the historic address on the Île de la Cité where Abraham-Louis Breguet established his workshop, and where the Maison’s marine chronometers were notably produced.

The pattern draws its shapes from the contours of the Île de la Cité and Île Saint-Louis while also suggesting the movement of waves. That combination makes the motif particularly appropriate for the Marine collection, connecting Parisian history with the nautical character of the watches.

The guilloché is executed by hand on a gold base before the dial receives a layer of lacquer, creating additional depth and intensity. The result is offered in several colours depending on the case: ice blue for the white-gold Marine 5517, black for the rose-gold version and a blue gradient for the titanium model. The Marine Chronographe 5527 follows a similar approach, with blue or grey treatments depending on the configuration.

Marine 5517: The Essential Expression

The Marine 5517 represents the more restrained interpretation of the collection, retaining a three-hand display while adding a date at 6 o’clock. The position of the date reinforces the symmetry of the dial and leaves the central composition relatively open.

Breguet’s traditional visual codes remain prominent. Applied Breguet numerals appear around the dial alongside the Maison’s characteristic “apple” hands, while the applied Breguet signature at 12 o’clock provides another three-dimensional element.

The maritime references are more subtle. The tip of the seconds hand forms a “B”, inspired by the “Bravo” maritime flag, while the crown guard recalls the movement of waves. On the reverse, the gold oscillating weight takes its inspiration from a ship’s rudder and extends the nautical theme into the movement itself.

The Marine 5517 measures 40mm in diameter, with a 47.7mm lug-to-lug measurement and an 11.5mm thickness. Its fluted middle case houses a screw-down crown, while sapphire crystals with anti-reflective treatment protect both sides of the watch. Water resistance reaches 100 metres.

Three case materials are available: 18K white gold, 18K rose gold and titanium. Each can be paired with a rubber strap or a matching metal bracelet, with the bracelet and folding clasp adapted to the case material.

The Calibre 777A

Inside the Marine 5517 is Breguet’s self-winding Calibre 777A, a movement measuring 33mm in diameter and 4.3mm thick. It contains 235 components and 26 jewels and operates at 4Hz, or 28,800 vibrations per hour.

The movement provides a 55-hour power reserve and features a silicon hairspring. Its gold oscillating weight, visible through the sapphire caseback, is shaped around the rudder-inspired theme of the Marine collection.

Marine Chronographe 5527: A Sportier Interpretation

The Marine Chronographe 5527 takes the same design language into a more technical direction with the addition of a flyback chronograph.

The chronograph seconds are indicated by a large central hand, while two counters sit at 3 and 9 o’clock for the chronograph minutes and small seconds. The arrangement maintains the legibility of the dial while giving the watch a more dynamic appearance.

The date remains positioned at 6 o’clock, while the gold Breguet appliqué at 12 and the Quai de l’Horloge guilloché establish continuity with the three-hand Marine 5517.

The nautical details also return. The central chronograph hand carries the “B” reference to the Bravo maritime flag, the crown guard evokes waves and the oscillating weight visible through the sapphire caseback once again draws inspiration from a rudder.

At 42.3mm in diameter, 50.7mm lug-to-lug and 13.9mm thick, the 5527 has a larger and more substantial presence than the 5517. Like its three-hand counterpart, it is water resistant to 100 metres and is offered in white gold, rose gold or titanium, with either rubber or a matching metal bracelet.

The Flyback Calibre 582QA

The Marine Chronographe 5527 is powered by the self-winding Calibre 582QA, a 6.5mm-thick chronograph movement measuring 30mm in diameter.

Its flyback function allows the chronograph to be reset and immediately restarted with a single operation. The calibre contains 343 components and 28 jewels, operates at 4Hz and offers a 48-hour power reserve.

Like the 777A, the 582QA uses silicon components, including a silicon hairspring and silicon inverted anchor, continuing Breguet’s use of modern materials within the Marine collection.

A New Balance Between Tradition And Performance

The latest Marine 5517 and 5527 versions bring together two sides of Breguet’s identity. The hand-executed Quai de l’Horloge guilloché connects the watches to the Maison’s Parisian origins and its traditional decorative craftsmanship, while the cases, water resistance and automatic movements maintain the contemporary performance expected from the Marine collection.

The result is not a historical recreation, but rather another interpretation of the Marine concept: traditional Breguet craftsmanship expressed through a collection designed for the modern world of navigation and adventure.
