Christopher Ward C1 Loco Classic: Mechanical Architecture Meets Classic Elegance

Christopher Ward gives its distinctive Loco concept a more traditional character, combining the hand-wound CW-003 movement with a sculpted steel case, a domed ceramic dial and three colour options.

A watch built around an exposed balance wheel and an unconventional time display might seem destined for a contemporary, technical aesthetic. With the new C1 Loco Classic, however, Christopher Ward demonstrates that the same mechanical concept can take on a very different personality. The latest addition to the brand’s Atelier collection retains the defining architecture of the C12 Loco while introducing a more classical design language.

First introduced in the C12 Loco in 2025, the CW-003 calibre remains at the centre of the experience. Rather than concealing the movement behind a conventional dial, Christopher Ward makes its mechanical architecture part of the watch’s visual identity. The C1 Loco Classic reinterprets that approach through softer shapes, traditional Roman numerals and carefully finished surfaces.

The result is a watch that looks more restrained than its predecessor without losing the mechanical theatre that makes the Loco series distinctive.

A Classical Case With Contemporary Details

The C1 Loco Classic is housed in a 41mm Light-catcher case made from 904L stainless steel. Its diameter gives it a substantial presence, while the rounded, individually soldered lugs and sculpted case flanks introduce a more refined character.

Brushed and polished surfaces create contrast across the case, while a scalloped groove runs along its sides. These details prevent the traditional styling from becoming overly conservative and give the watch a distinctive profile.

Thickness is an important consideration. The complete watch measures 14.1mm, including its domed sapphire crystals, while the case itself measures 8.55mm without the crystals. The pronounced domes contribute to the watch’s appearance and provide clear views of its mechanical construction from both sides.

Water resistance is rated at 30 metres. This specification reinforces the C1 Loco Classic’s focus on design and mechanical display rather than sports-watch versatility.

Three Dial Colours, One Mechanical Identity

Christopher Ward offers the C1 Loco Classic in three dial colours: light blue, black and gold. Each version combines a textured base dial with a raised white ceramic sub-dial, creating a layered composition that draws the eye towards the watch’s unusual layout.

The base dial is grain-sandblasted before receiving a varnish containing powdered mother-of-pearl. This process gives the surface a subtle shimmer, allowing its appearance to change with the light without overwhelming the mechanical elements.

The white ceramic sub-dial occupies the upper portion of the display. Its strongly domed surface features laser-engraved Roman numerals and minute markings, individually filled with black lacquer by hand. Blue PVD-coated, diamond-cut lance hands indicate the hours and minutes, following the curvature of the ceramic surface.

Below the time display, the exposed balance wheel and escapement take centre stage. The arrangement creates a clear separation between the conventional reading of the time and the mechanical action responsible for keeping it. It is a distinctive approach that gives the C1 Loco Classic its own identity within the brand’s collection.

The CW-003 Calibre Takes Centre Stage

At the heart of the C1 Loco Classic is the CW-003, a manually wound movement first introduced with the C12 Loco. Its specifications remain a major part of the watch’s appeal.

Operating at 28,800 vibrations per hour, the calibre uses a free-sprung balance and twin barrels to deliver a power reserve of approximately 144 hours, equivalent to six days. Christopher Ward states an accuracy tolerance of -0/+7 seconds per day, while the movement contains 29 jewels.

The movement’s architecture is also central to the new model’s design. Christopher Ward has redesigned the front and rear bridges for the C1 Loco Classic, replacing the earlier styling with slimmer, more rounded forms that better suit the watch’s classical appearance.

These bridges receive more than five hours of hand-finishing by APJ, the brand’s specialist finishing partner based in the Swiss Jura. On the reverse, the symmetrical arrangement of the twin barrels and intermediate winding wheel creates a composition of three stacked circles. The grained baseplate, warm 2N gold plating and polished bevels add further depth to the display.

This attention to finishing helps distinguish the C1 Loco Classic from a watch that simply reveals its movement. Here, the mechanical components are both functional and an integral part of the overall design.

Suede Or Steel Bracelet

The C1 Loco Classic is available with a suede leather strap and Christopher Ward’s Bader deployant clasp. The strap suits the watch’s more traditional character, balancing the polished case and decorative dial.

An alternative is the five-row Consort bracelet, made from 904L stainless steel to match the case. It features a combination of brushed and polished surfaces, along with quick-release end-links and the brand’s tool-free iLink adjustment system. The clasp also offers on-the-fly extension, providing additional flexibility when adjusting the fit.

The choice between the two configurations changes the overall character of the watch: the suede strap emphasises its dressier side, while the steel bracelet introduces a more substantial, jewellery-like appearance.

Pricing And Availability

The Christopher Ward C1 Loco Classic has been nominated in the Petite Aiguille category at the 2026 Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève, placing it among the watches recognised in this year’s awards selection.

The model is available to pre-order through Christopher Ward’s Time+Tide Studios in London, New York and Melbourne.

Prices start at €5,595 / US$5,995 / £4,295 with the suede strap and Bader deployant clasp. The Consort stainless steel bracelet version is priced at €5,855 / US$6,275 / £4,495.

With the C1 Loco Classic, Christopher Ward takes an established mechanical concept in a new stylistic direction. The combination of a distinctive dial, exposed movement components and carefully finished bridges gives the watch a clear identity, while the three colour options and choice of strap or bracelet allow for different interpretations of the same design.
