Hublot Classic Fusion Tributo: A Golden Return To The 1980 Origin

Hublot Revisits Its Founding Design With Two 38mm Gold Models, Combining The Original Gold-And-Rubber Aesthetic With A Modern Manufacture Movement.

The Hublot Classic Fusion Tributo revisits the watchmaking vision that Carlo Crocco introduced in 1980, when gold and rubber formed an unconventional combination. Available in 18K yellow gold or 18K white gold, this new 38mm model honours the original design while bringing the story forward with the HUB1711 automatic manufacture movement.

Rather than simply reproducing the original watch, the Classic Fusion Tributo brings its distinctive design language into the present. The familiar contrast between gold and black remains central to the aesthetic, while the construction, finishing and movement reflect the technical development of Hublot’s manufacture in Nyon.

A Design Rooted In 1980

The Classic Fusion Tributo preserves several defining elements of the original Hublot. Its bezel is secured by twelve slightly domed H-shaped screws, while the dial remains deliberately restrained, with no hour indices and a date window positioned at 3 o’clock. The exposed lugs and black lined rubber strap reinforce the original combination of contrasting materials.

The case measures 38mm in diameter, an increase from the 36mm dimensions of the 1980 watch. At 9.5mm thick, it retains a relatively slim profile for a gold-cased watch. A screwed crown helps provide water resistance to 100 metres, while a sapphire crystal caseback reveals the movement within.

Hublot has also chosen to retain the traditional strap attachment rather than introduce its One Click system. According to the brand, this decision helps preserve the character and construction of the original design.

Two Gold Versions, Two Different Personalities

Although both versions share the same case dimensions and movement architecture, their dials and oscillating weights create distinct identities.

The Classic Fusion Tributo Yellow Gold, reference 262.VX.1130.RX.MDM, comes in polished and satin-finished 18K yellow gold. Its matte black dial has a subtle charcoal effect, with gold MDM lettering at 6 o’clock recalling the signature associated with the original MDM Genève watch. Inside, the open-worked oscillating weight is made from 22K yellow gold, continuing the material theme across the watch.

The Classic Fusion Tributo White Gold, reference 262.WX.6870.RX.MDM, adopts a more understated and formal appearance. Its polished 18K white gold case is paired with a black onyx dial and black-plated titanium bezel screws. The oscillating weight is made from black tungsten, reinforcing the darker visual treatment.

Both versions are fitted with a black lined rubber strap. Their shared design keeps the focus on the contrast between precious metal and rubber, while the dial and movement details distinguish each execution.

From Quartz To Manufacture Automatic

One of the most significant changes lies inside the case. The original 1980 watch used a quartz movement; the Classic Fusion Tributo instead houses the HUB1711 Manufacture self-winding calibre.

The movement consists of 185 components and operates at a frequency of 4 Hz, or 28,800 vibrations per hour. It offers an approximate power reserve of 50 hours. The open-worked oscillating weight, shaped around Hublot’s recognisable “H” motif, can be seen through the sapphire caseback.

This mechanical update is central to the Tributo’s concept. The exterior recalls the watch that established Hublot’s design identity, while the movement represents the manufacture’s development since 1980.

A Tribute With A Charitable Dimension

The name MDM has a significance beyond the watch’s history. It connects to the Main Dans la Main Foundation, founded by Carlo Crocco in 1998 to support humanitarian and educational projects for vulnerable children and communities in need.

As part of the launch, Hublot has announced a donation of CHF 100,000 to the foundation, in tribute to Crocco’s vision and values.
