Fifteen complications, Westminster-style chimes and a flying tourbillon return in a technically enhanced single-piece interpretation of Jaeger-LeCoultre’s Calibre 182.

Jaeger-LeCoultre has unveiled a new interpretation of one of the most ambitious movements in its history: the Duometre Grande Complication A Grande Sonnerie. At its heart is Calibre 182, a movement originally introduced in 2009 with the Hybris Mechanica à Grande Sonnerie and notable for bringing together a Grande Sonnerie, Petite Sonnerie, minute repeater, retrograde perpetual calendar and flying tourbillon within a single wristwatch.

The Jaeger-LeCoultre Duometre Grande Complication retains the fundamental architecture of Calibre 182 while introducing a series of technical developments focused particularly on acoustic performance, robustness and usability. With 15 complications and approximately 1,300 components, the calibre remains an extraordinary exercise in mechanical integration. Jaeger-LeCoultre describes the new interpretation as the subject of eight patents, including six relating specifically to developments of Calibre 182, while a ninth patent concerns the micro-adjustment mechanism in the folding buckle.

A Legacy Built Around Chiming Watches

Few complications are as closely associated with Jaeger-LeCoultre as the chiming watch. Over more than 150 years, the Manufacture has developed more than 200 different chiming calibres, covering everything from alarms and minute repeaters to Grandes Sonneries and Westminster chimes.

That accumulated expertise provides the foundation for Calibre 182. The Grande Sonnerie represents one of the greatest challenges in mechanical watchmaking because the movement must automatically strike the hours and quarters while maintaining sufficient energy for accurate timekeeping. In this latest interpretation, Jaeger-LeCoultre continues that tradition while introducing technical solutions designed to improve both sound and resilience.

The original Calibre 182 required more than five years of research and development. Its complexity was such that assembling and regulating the movement alone takes a full year, involving four separate phases and approximately 16,000 individual operations.

The Duometre Solution

The defining technical principle behind Calibre 182 is Jaeger-LeCoultre’s Duometre architecture, first developed by the Manufacture in 2007. The system addresses a fundamental problem in highly complicated watches: the additional energy required by complications such as chiming mechanisms can interfere with the consistency of the energy delivered to the timekeeping system.

Calibre 182 therefore uses two independent energy sources, each with its own barrel and gear train while sharing a single regulating organ. One barrel supplies the timekeeping and perpetual calendar functions, while the second is dedicated to the chiming mechanism. This separation allows the striking functions to demand substantial bursts of energy without directly affecting the regularity of the timekeeping mechanism.

The timekeeping and calendar barrel provides 48 hours of power reserve. The barrel dedicated to the chiming mechanism can deliver up to 616 notes in Grande Sonnerie mode, corresponding to seven and a half hours of continuous chiming, or up to 992 notes in Petite Sonnerie mode, equivalent to 32 hours. A third barrel is also incorporated into the calibre, replacing the winding action traditionally associated with the repeater trigger.

Westminster Chimes In Four Notes

The Grande Sonnerie mechanism uses four gongs and four hammers, allowing Calibre 182 to reproduce four different notes in combinations inspired by the Westminster chime of London’s Big Ben. The four notes are E, C, D and G, which are arranged into five different phrases and combined to create the melodies corresponding to the quarter hours.

Interestingly, Jaeger-LeCoultre chose a different sequence for its Grande and Petite Sonnerie modes. The quarter-hour melody sounds first, followed by the corresponding hour. The minute repeater, by contrast, follows the conventional sequence of hours, quarters and minutes.

In Grande Sonnerie mode, the hour melody consists of six four-note phrases, producing a total of 24 notes. According to Jaeger-LeCoultre, this makes it one of the longest Grande Sonnerie melodies played by a watch equipped with a striking mechanism.

Engineering The Sound

The latest version of Calibre 182 places particular emphasis on acoustic refinement. The gongs have been lengthened to increase resonance, while their fixing, tuning and shape have all been revised. The inner case body and caseback bezel are now made from titanium, contributing to the strength and depth of the sound.

The gong geometry has also been modified at an extremely small scale. Rather than adjusting only the fundamental note through conventional tuning, the revised shape allows the watchmakers to influence both the fundamental note and six additional notes that form part of the resulting chord. The objective is a more melodious and tonally refined sound.

Behind the melodies is an equally intricate information system. A tower-shaped strike sequence governor translates the position of the hands into the information required by the racks and striking mechanism. Visible on the dial side between 8 and 9 o’clock, this mechanism consists of 22 components despite measuring only 6.04mm in height.

A second tower mechanism, nicknamed the “tour infernale” by Jaeger-LeCoultre’s watchmakers, governs the six permutations of the four notes used to create the different melodies. Its construction comprises a stack of five snails that provides the racks with the information required for the Grande Sonnerie, Petite Sonnerie and minute repeater sequences.

Security And Intuitive Operation

For a complication as delicate as a Grande Sonnerie, protection against incorrect operation is essential. Calibre 182 therefore incorporates a selector mechanism that effectively disables the other functions according to the mode selected by the wearer.

The mode is displayed at 6 o’clock, with M representing time setting and G, P and S corresponding to Grande Sonnerie, Petite Sonnerie and silence. In the latest version, the minute repeater receives an additional security mechanism that prevents it from being triggered again before the previous chiming sequence has fully reset.

Despite the extraordinary complexity beneath the dial, the watch is operated through three pushers. The minute repeater is activated through a pusher integrated into the crown, while the lower pusher selects the chiming mode. The upper pusher corrects the perpetual calendar day indication, with the month and date correctors concealed between the lugs at 12 o’clock.

An Openworked Expression

The aesthetic has also been revised. The dial is more open-worked than that of the previous generation, exposing more of the mechanical architecture beneath it. At the same time, the diameter of the hour-minute-calendar dial has increased by 30 percent, improving legibility while bringing greater balance to the composition.

Dark blue-grey lacquer provides a restrained background against the movement’s numerous components and the warm tones of 18k pink gold. The hour-minute dial combines sunray brushing beneath the lacquer with a gradient dark blue lacquer finish over sunray guilloché, complemented by applied 18k pink-gold hour markers.

The retrograde date forms an arc between 7 and 11 o’clock, while the retrograde day and month displays are laser engraved onto a pink-gold inner ring. Two openworked power-reserve indicators remain visible, while the leap-year display at 12 o’clock balances the chiming mode indicator at 6 o’clock.

On the reverse, the sapphire crystal reveals the flying tourbillon and the extensive finishing applied throughout the movement. Jaeger-LeCoultre cites nine distinct finishing techniques, including sandblasting, perlage, snailing, hand bevelling, sunk rubies, polished screws, sunray Côtes de Genève and several forms of brushing. A total of 87 hours of hand bevelling were dedicated to 251 components.

A Single Piece Of Haute Horlogerie

The complexity of the movement extends into the case, which consists of 60 components. Its titanium case body is combined with 18k pink-gold elements for the lugs, bezel and pushers, with the gold components receiving both microblasted and polished finishes.

Measuring 45mm in diameter and 16.16mm thick, the watch houses approximately 1,300 components in a remarkable feat of miniaturisation. It is paired with a black alligator strap and an 18k pink-gold folding buckle incorporating a patented fine-adjustment mechanism.

The Duometre Grande Complication A Grande Sonnerie ultimately stands not as a limited production, but as a pièce unique — a single-piece creation that brings together Jaeger-LeCoultre’s historic expertise in chiming watches with a modern interpretation of one of its most technically demanding calibres.
