Piaget Polo Minute Repeater Brings Haute Horlogerie To The Sports Watch

A partially openworked dial reveals the hand-finished Calibre 1290P, combining minute-repeater mechanics, ultra-thin expertise and the craftsmanship of Piaget’s La Côte-aux-Fées Manufacture.

Piaget introduces the Piaget Polo Minute Repeater, a new expression of the Maison’s long-standing expertise in ultra-thin watchmaking and high complications. Housed within the contemporary Piaget Polo collection, the watch places its mechanical architecture on display through a partially openworked dial, revealing the technical and artisanal work behind the Calibre 1290P.

Since Georges-Édouard Piaget founded the Maison in La Côte-aux-Fées in 1874, the pursuit of technical excellence has remained central to Piaget’s identity. Its founding principle — to “always do better than necessary” — has shaped a history of ultra-thin movements and established the Maison at the intersection of Haute Horlogerie and Haute Joaillerie.

The Piaget Polo Minute Repeater continues that tradition while bringing one of watchmaking’s most sophisticated complications into Piaget’s modern sports-watch collection.

From Ultra-Thin Mastery To The Piaget Polo

The new release builds on Piaget’s modern legacy of ultra-thin chiming watches. In 2013, the Maison introduced the world’s thinnest minute repeater in the Piaget Polo Emperador case, marking another milestone in its long-standing expertise.

The new Piaget Polo Minute Repeater takes that achievement into the contemporary Polo collection, retaining the line’s fluid shape-in-shape design while incorporating a highly complex chiming mechanism.

The result is a watch that combines the technical ambition of a grand complication with the wearability and elegance expected from the Piaget Polo.

Mastery From The Inside Out

The Calibre 1290P is entirely conceived, developed, finished and assembled at Piaget’s Manufacture in La Côte-aux-Fées.

Its 430 components require many weeks of hand finishing and assembly. The bridges are hand-bevelled, the mainplate receives a subtle guilloché decoration, and the minute-repeater hammers are hand-polished to a mirror finish.

At the heart of the movement is a platinum micro-rotor. The choice of platinum is dictated not only by haute horlogerie tradition but also by its superior winding efficiency. It is finished with a rich blue PVD coating that matches the vibrant dial.

The partially openworked dial provides a direct view of the movement, turning the technical architecture and finishing into an integral part of the watch’s design.

A Dial Between Watchmaking And Jewellery

The dial reflects Piaget’s dual expertise in Haute Horlogerie and Haute Joaillerie.

Executed in gold, its surface is decorated with hand-guilloché, creating a soleillé or sunray finish that radiates across the dial. A delicate opaline outer track adds contrast and depth.

A finely crafted gold fillet crosses the dial, with its profile transitioning from straight to domed as it reveals sections of the minute-repeater mechanism beneath.

At four o’clock, a smoked blue sapphire ring bearing the “La Côte-aux-Fées” inscription sits above the inertia wheel. This leaves the dedicated regulator of the minute repeater fully visible.

More than 150 hours were dedicated to the development of the dial alone, followed by a further 50 hours of hand finishing for each individual piece.

The Sound Of Piaget

For a minute repeater, however, visual craftsmanship is only part of the story. Its ultimate signature is its voice.

The Calibre 1290P produces a stated intensity of 64 decibels, three harmonic partials and a damping factor of 2,600. These characteristics are the result of extensive research into both movement mechanics and case resonance.

The hours are struck at G sharp, while the minutes are struck at A sharp, both in the fifth octave.

The chiming slide is positioned at nine o’clock and activates downwards. According to Piaget, this configuration is the result of a complete reimagining of the movement architecture.

A Minute Repeater In The Polo

All of this is housed inside an 18-karat white-gold case measuring 48mm in diameter and only 9.30mm thick.

Despite the complexity of the complication, the case retains the fluid shape-in-shape design characteristic of the Piaget Polo.

The watch is also tested against magnetic fields of up to 15,000 gauss and is certified waterprThe watch is water resistant to 3 ATM and is delivered on a blue textured embossed calfskin strap with a folding clasp, together with an additional leather bracelet.oof to 100 metres. Its 65-hour power reserve is likewise part of the certification.

Only five numbered pieces of the Piaget Polo Minute Repeater will be crafted this year. This is not a limited edition by design, but rather a consequence of the extensive work required to produce each individual piece.

Haute Joaillerie Meets Haute Horlogerie

Alongside the Piaget Polo Minute Repeater, Piaget is also introducing a High Jewellery version that places the Maison’s dual expertise in watchmaking and jewellery even more prominently on display.

The bezel is set with baguette-cut blue sapphires, while the case combines baguette-cut and brilliant-cut diamonds.

The dial is fully openworked, placing more than 70 hours of handcraft in unobstructed view.

This version represents an even rarer expression of Piaget’s ability to bring Haute Joaillerie and Haute Horlogerie together, with the acoustic character of the minute repeater completing the composition.

When A Sports Watch Becomes A Work Of Art

With the Piaget Polo Minute Repeater, Piaget continues to explore the boundaries of its modern sports-watch collection.

The combination of a minute repeater, the hand-finished Manufacture Calibre 1290P, an intricately crafted openworked dial and an 18-karat white-gold case measuring just 9.30mm thick demonstrates how far the Polo platform can be taken.
