IWC Ingenieur Automatic 50th Anniversary Celebrates Gérald Genta’s Iconic Design
Fifty years after the original Ingenieur SL, IWC Schaffhausen marks Gérald Genta’s defining design with two limited-edition interpretations.
In 1976, IWC Schaffhausen introduced the Ingenieur SL, Reference 1832, a watch that would eventually become one of the most recognisable designs in the brand’s history. Created by Gérald Genta during one of the most influential periods of his career, the Ingenieur SL brought together a bold case, an integrated bracelet and a distinctly architectural approach to luxury sports watchmaking.
At the time, integrated-bracelet steel sports watches were still emerging as a new category in Swiss watchmaking. Despite its forward-looking design, the Ingenieur SL was not an immediate commercial success. Between 1976 and 1983, only 598 examples were produced, and it was only decades later that collectors began to fully appreciate the importance of Genta’s design.
Fifty years after its introduction, IWC is celebrating the anniversary with two limited editions of the modern Ingenieur Automatic. IWC Ingenieur Automatic 50th Anniversary is Available in 40mm and 35mm, both models reinterpret the visual language of the original while introducing a distinctive detail inspired by a particularly rare version of the 1970s watch.

Inspired By A Rare Ingenieur SL
The defining feature of both anniversary editions is their brushed silver-plated dial. While the Ingenieur SL is most closely associated with its structured grid dial, IWC also produced a less common version featuring a silver-plated dial with a brushed finish. That variant provides the inspiration for the new watches.
The dials combine the understated silver surface with rhodium-plated hands and metal hour markers, all filled with Super-LumiNova®. There is also a subtle but deliberate change to the Ingenieur logo. The characteristic lightning bolt normally positioned below the name has been replaced by the number “50”, marking the half-century anniversary.
The result is a restrained approach to the anniversary theme. Rather than covering the dial with commemorative details, IWC incorporates the reference to 50 years into one of the watch’s most recognisable visual elements.

Two Sizes, One Design Language
The Ingenieur Automatic 40 50th Anniversary, Reference IW328910, measures 40mm and follows the contemporary proportions of the modern Ingenieur collection. The Ingenieur Automatic 35 50th Anniversary, Reference IW324909, reduces the diameter to 35mm while retaining the essential architecture of the design.
Both watches feature stainless-steel cases and integrated stainless-steel bracelets. The bracelets attach through their middle links and are designed around ergonomics and wrist comfort, while their finishing combines satin-brushed and polished surfaces.
There is, however, a subtle difference between the two executions. The bracelet of the 40mm model is satin-finished, whereas the middle links of the 35mm version are polished, giving the smaller watch a slightly more jewellery-like character.
Both cases retain the characteristic Ingenieur bezel, secured by five functional screws. Satin finishing across the bezel is contrasted by polished edges, reinforcing the sculptural quality that has remained central to the Genta-inspired design.
Two Movements For Two Interpretations
The 40mm Ingenieur Automatic 50th Anniversary is powered by IWC’s manufacture Caliber 32111. Its automatic winding system uses a double-pawl mechanism and provides a substantial 120-hour power reserve.
In keeping with the spirit of the original Ingenieur SL, the movement is protected by a soft-iron inner case designed to shield it against magnetic fields. This technical feature remains an important part of the Ingenieur’s identity as a robust, functional sports watch.

The 35mm model takes a different approach with IWC Caliber 47110, visible through a sapphire display case back. The movement features circular graining and Geneva stripes, while its oscillating weight is finished in gold, adding a more decorative element to the smaller reference.

A Design That Continues To Evolve
The anniversary editions also underline how significantly the Ingenieur has evolved since its return in 2023. IWC has progressively expanded the collection across different case sizes, dial colours and materials, moving from stainless steel into titanium, 18-carat 5N gold and ceramic.
The collection has also grown beyond the basic time-and-date format, with complications including a perpetual calendar and a tourbillon. Yet despite these developments, the fundamental visual language of the Ingenieur remains tied to the principles established by Genta in 1976: an integrated bracelet, a strong geometric case and a design where functionality and architecture are closely connected.
With 1,150 pieces of each reference, the Ingenieur Automatic 40 50th Anniversary and Ingenieur Automatic 35 50th Anniversary mark five decades of a design that initially struggled to find its audience but ultimately became one of the defining chapters in IWC’s history.
