Seiko Presage Tomioka Silk Celebrates the Art of Japanese Silk Craftsmanship

Four New Creations Inspired by One of Japan’s Most Prestigious Cultural Traditions

Seiko Presage Tomioka Silk is the latest expression of the Japanese brand’s ability to combine mechanical watchmaking with the country’s rich artistic heritage. Renowned for translating traditional Japanese crafts into distinctive dial designs, the Presage collection now welcomes four new creations inspired by the beauty and elegance of Tomioka silk, one of Japan’s most celebrated textile traditions.

The new releases include three regular-production models and a limited edition of 2,000 pieces, each featuring a newly developed dial pattern designed to capture the texture, luster, and graceful drape of silk produced in the Tomioka region of Gunma Prefecture.

More than a simple aesthetic exercise, the collection pays tribute to a craft that has played a pivotal role in Japan’s cultural and industrial history for over a century.

The Legacy of Tomioka Silk

Produced exclusively from locally cultivated cocoons, Tomioka silk is prized for its exceptionally fine and uniform threads, smooth texture, subtle sheen, and elegant appearance. The material has long been regarded as one of the finest examples of Japanese silk craftsmanship.

Its story is inseparable from the Tomioka Silk Mill, established in 1872 and widely recognized as a cornerstone of Japan’s industrial modernization. The mill became the center of the country’s silk industry and helped establish Japan as one of the world’s leading silk producers.

In recognition of its historical importance, the “Tomioka Silk Mill and Related Sites” were designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2014.

Today, the Tomioka Silk Promotion Organization continues to preserve and promote this legacy, supporting every stage of production, from cocoon cultivation to the development and commercialization of domestically produced silk products.

Through these new Presage creations, Seiko celebrates both the beauty of Tomioka silk and the cultural significance it continues to hold.

A New Dial Pattern Inspired by the Flow of Silk

The defining feature of the new collection is its intricate dial design.

Seiko developed a completely new pattern intended to evoke the flowing texture and luminous quality of finely woven silk. The dial surface captures the natural movement of the material, creating a rich interplay of light and shadow that changes depending on the viewing angle.

The effect is particularly striking on the limited-edition model.

Its dial reflects the pristine whiteness and refined sheen of silk produced by a rare silkworm variety cultivated in Gunma Prefecture. A pearl-like coating enhances the visual depth, creating a sophisticated radiance that closely resembles the appearance of luxurious silk fabric.

The result is a dial that feels both contemporary and deeply connected to traditional Japanese craftsmanship.

A New 38mm Case for the Presage Classic Series

All four models introduce a new case size to the Presage Classic Series.

Measuring 38.0mm in diameter and 12.9mm in thickness, the case offers elegant proportions suited to a wide variety of wrist sizes while preserving the refined character of the collection.

The limited-edition model features a stainless-steel case with pink-gold-colored plating, complemented by a dark brown leather strap inspired by the iconic brick architecture of the Tomioka Silk Mill.

The three regular-production references feature stainless-steel cases with Seiko’s super-hard coating, while two models are paired with matching steel bracelets and the Sakura-Iro version receives a leather strap.

All versions feature a dual-curved sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating on the inner surface and a screw-down exhibition caseback that reveals the movement within.

Powered by the Caliber 6R51

Inside each watch beats Seiko’s automatic Caliber 6R51.

Operating at a frequency of 21,600 vibrations per hour (3 Hz), the movement features 24 jewels and delivers an impressive power reserve of approximately 72 hours, allowing the watch to run for three full days when fully wound.

The caliber reflects the Presage collection’s commitment to combining traditional aesthetics with reliable mechanical performance and everyday practicality.

Supporting the Future of Japanese Silk

Beyond celebrating a historic craft, the new collection also contributes to its preservation.

Seiko Presage will donate a portion of the proceeds from the collection to the Tomioka Silk Promotion Organization, supporting initiatives aimed at safeguarding sericulture, silk production, and the cultural heritage associated with the Tomioka region.

This partnership reinforces the brand’s commitment to preserving traditional Japanese craftsmanship for future generations.

Availability and Pricing

The four new Seiko Presage Tomioka Silk models will be available from July 2026 through Seiko Boutiques and selected retailers worldwide.

Pricing is set at €1,200 for the limited-edition HCC008, while the three regular-production models will retail between €1,030 and €1,050 depending on configuration.

Final Thoughts

Seiko Presage Tomioka Silk demonstrates once again the collection’s unique ability to transform elements of Japanese culture into compelling mechanical watches.

Rather than simply drawing inspiration from traditional aesthetics, these new releases celebrate a craft that remains deeply woven into Japan’s cultural identity. Through their intricate silk-inspired dials, refined proportions, and reliable mechanical movements, the four new Presage creations successfully bridge heritage and contemporary watchmaking.

Combined with Seiko’s support of the Tomioka Silk Promotion Organization, the collection serves not only as a tribute to Japanese craftsmanship but also as a meaningful contribution to preserving one of the nation’s most important cultural traditions.
